Yard care is lake care because chemical runoff from fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides flows into the lake and storm drains and seeps into groundwater. This causes toxic algae blooms and degrades water quality in lakes and Puget Sound. Thus, we ask that residents do not use fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in areas close to the shoreline and that will wash/drain into the lake. Adopting natural practices keeps our waterways pristine and safe for swimming and wildlife.
Help us create a gorgeous, lake-friendly yard, focus on these five natural yard care principles:
- Build healthy soil: Mix 1 to 3 inches of compost into your beds to improve drainage and naturally feed your lawn without relying on synthetic fertilizers. [1]
- Mow correctly: Keep your grass mowed high (around 2.5 to 3 inches) and leave the clippings on the lawn to act as a natural, nitrogen-rich fertilizer. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Plant right for the PNW: Choose native, drought-resistant plants that require less watering and fewer pesticides. [1, 2]
- Smart watering: Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth and winterize irrigation systems to prevent overwatering. [1]
