Many factors contribute to Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in our lakes. Some of these we cannot control – like weather and water temperature. Others, like nutrients caused by use of fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides, can be controlled. Once HABs get out of control, control efforts are very expensive. We are
fortunate that Offut Lake has less algae problems than other lakes in Thurston County. Our collective responsibility is to
keep it that way.

One way we can all help is to stop using or reduce using fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides. When these substances migrate to our lake, they can increase the nutrients that algae need to grow. Here are some helpful tips to alternatives to pesticides and insecticides: LINK.
